Brief Introduction

Huaqiao UniversityHQU, established in 1960, is a comprehensive institution of higher learning that has been given priority by the China central government. It is one of the first Chinese universities being rated Excellence in the nationwide undergraduate teaching quality assessment administered by the Ministry of Education, and China’s major bases for educating all-round university students, and for running Chinese language and culture programs tailored to overseas Chinese students. The incumbent president is Prof. JIA YIMINan expert in overseas Chinese language and culture education. For over half a century since its establishment, HQU has nurtured more than 160,000 graduates, among whom 50,000 originated from over 70 countries and regions. It still takes pride in being one of the Chinese mainland universities with the largest enrollment of overseas students.  

HQU situates in two favorable cities of Fujian Province, P.R.China., one in Xiamen, a UNESCO-named most livable coastal garden city, and the other in Quanzhou famous for its rich cultural heritage,.  

  HQU is globally minded and clearly visible in a unique campus atmosphere evident in its cultural diversity and harmony.

  HQU houses 34 faculties offering 90 undergraduate programs and 140 research units, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and arts. Currently it has over 30,000 enrolled students, including 5,000 hailing from over 70 countries and regions, making it one of the Chinese mainland universities that attract the largest number of overseas students of ethnic Chinese background.  

      The university sets its goal at cultivating students’ creative, practical, and adaptive capabilities by laying emphasis on a combination of “solid foundation, broad knowledge, professional competence, and full-fledged character”. It boasts a highly qualified team of devoted teaching staff. To date it has forged partnerships with over 100 foreign institutions of higher education, including universities and colleges in the US, UK, Japan, Canada, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, etc.    

  The university’s strengths in engineering, management, and economics are recognized as among the best of its kind in comparison with other mainland universities. Programs in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration and Tourism Management have been rated highly. HQU follows international standard in its credit system and features multi-cultural educational settings.

According to regulations issued by the national education administration and the university itself, students enrolled in the above ten programs are not allowed to transfer to other regular undergraduate programs; neither are students enrolled in other programs allowed to transfer to the ten programs mentioned above.

(3)    High-achievers in the bachelor programs may continue to pursue Masters’ programs in the same field via recommendation by the college and final verification by the university.

(4)    Intakes of foreign citizens who have applied for Chinese Language and Culture Education and Chinese Language programs are allowed to choose a class that suits their entry proficiency level. The Chinese Language program is open to apply twice a year, respectively in the Spring and Fall semesters.

Introduction to 1+2+1 Sino-American Joint Program

Under the guidance and coordination of CCIEE (China Centre for International Education Exchange) and ASSCU (American Association of State Colleges and Universities), 121 International Class is designed to strengthen students’ academic skills and improve their English level before they enter into CHEPD (Sino-American Cooperation on Higher Education and Professional Development) 121 dual-degree program. This program is based on mutual credit acceptance and transfer, in order to provide meaningful and diverse educational experiences for HQU students.

After completing the freshman year at HQU, students will complete the sophomore and junior years at one of the United States partner universities. Their majors at U.S. universities depend on their majors at HQU.

In the final year, students are expected to return to HQU to complete their study. Students completing all requirements of both institutions’ bachelor’s programs will be granted Diploma and Bachelor’s degree from both the American partner university and Huaqiao University.

Admission Policy

Recruitment for undergraduate programs is a yearly event in the Fall semester; while recruitment for preparatory programs takes place twice a year, in the Spring and Fall semesters, respectively.

I.          Qualifications

With senior secondary school diploma or an equivalent, good behavioral and clean criminal record, physical fitness, are eligible and must present the following documents:

(1)    For candidates in Hong Kang and Macau:

Permanent or non-permanent resident Identification Card and Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents

(2)    For candidates in Taiwan:

Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents

(3)    For overseas Chinese:

Has attained permanent or non-permanent residence permit, has documented evidence of two years’ residence (Nine months of residence may be counted as one year; time of residence for study as a foreign student or work on a business assignment is not recognized as residence in a foreign country) in the foreign country in the past four years (up to the date of application deadline); must present an authorized certificate or notary certificate issued by the Chinese Embassy (Consulate) as regards the candidate’s residence status, the Chinese passport and Please apply for an personal entry and exit records of the last four years at the local exit-entry administration bureau.

Myanmar

1.       Requirement for examination-free admission to undergraduate programs

Candidates must be senior secondary school graduates who have attained:

 HSK level 5 or above

 A score of 400 or above in the Myanmar national college entrance examination

 Or a diploma from a local junior secondary Chinese school and have completed at least one year of study at a local university.

2.       Requirement for examination-free admission to preparatory programs

Candidates must be senior secondary school graduates who have attained:

 A score of 200 or above in the Myanmar college entrance examination;

 Or graduates from Chinese schools who have been recommended by the Chinese schools, Chinese community organizations.

Candidates who meet the above requirement may choose to enter any of the following preparatory schools or colleges affiliated to HQU:

1)      HQU School of Preparatory Studies in Kunming (Kunming Chinese Language School)

2)      HQU School of Preparatory Studies in Nanning (Guangxi Overseas Chinese School)

3)      HQU College of Chinese Language and Culture Education in Xiamen, Fujian Province.

Students at above locations may enter HQU’s undergraduate programs after satisfactorily completing the one year preparatory programs.

Indonesia

Candidates who have obtained a senior secondary diploma after passing UJIAN NASIONAL SEKOLAH MENENGAH ATAS or UJIAN PERSAMAAN PAKET C.For details, refer to Huaqiao University Prospectus for Indonesian students.

Application deadline: July 30, for undergraduates and preparatory students for the fall semester

Thailand

1、  Examination-free admission to undergraduate programs

Candidates must have attained HSK level 5 or above and a score of 230 in the Thailand’s national college entrance examination or have already studied at a local university for one year or more.

2、  Examination-free admission to preparatory programs

Candidates must have attained an average score of 45 for all subjects or are recommended by local Chinese schools and Chinese community organizations after graduation from senior secondary Chinese schools.

Candidates may choose to enter any of the three institutions for their one-year preparatory studies before getting accepted into undergraduate programs.

 Kunming Chinese Language School

 Guangxi Overseas Chinese School

 HQU College of Chinese Language and Culture in Xiamen, Fujian Province.

Application deadline: June 1~July 30

Vietnam

Candidates in Vietnam may be accepted into undergraduate or preparatory programs with a senior secondary graduate score or a national college entrance score. According to the Agreement of Joint Admission signed between HQU and Tỉnh Lào Cai Education and Training Department, candidates in Vietnam’s Tỉnh Lào Cai may enter HQU’s undergraduate programs or enter preparatory programs offered at Preparatory Studies (KUNMING Overseas Chinese School) if they meet the above prerequisites.

Other countries and regions

Candidates who have not taken any of the university examinations mentioned previously, but who meet the qualifications of senior secondary graduates or equivalents, may get accepted into HQU undergraduate or preparatory programs via references from the Chinese embassies (consulates), Chinese community organizations, overseas Chinese schools, or HQU’s admission offices. The admissions are to be finalized by the university based on candidates’ academic record and Chinese language proficiency levels.

Up to now, HQU has set up branch admission offices in Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Austria, Italy, Spain, Demark, Sweden, UK, Germany, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Japan, Mongolia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos,Cambodia etc...Candidates may get the contact information of the local admission office via HQU Admissions Office.

Chinese Language and Culture Education and Chinese Language

Chinese Language and Culture Education is a four-year undergraduate program designed for Chinese language teacher preparation open to foreign students. The main objective of the program is to cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers for overseas schools, with a focus on Southeast Asian countries. Scholarships are available for prospective students in this program.

Scholarships

For students who perform well on academic studiesHQU offers them a variety of scholarships ranging from School to University levels. And the coverage of the scholarships can be up to 50%. Special scholarships only for the overseas are: LIN XIUHUA Scholarship for HK students, CHEN MING-JIN Scholarship for Macau students, Scholarship for Hang Kong, Macau, and Overseas Chinese students, WANG BINCHENG Scholarship for exceptional overseas Chinese students, HUANG ZHONGXIAN Scholarship for overseas Chinese and foreign students, etc.

Verification

After the registration, HQU reserves the right to verify students’ identities or physical examination results at any time. Those who fail the verification will be disqualified from admission.

Graduation and Employment

Students will be granted diploma after they have completed the required courses and passed all the examinations. Bachelor’s degrees will be conferred if the national degree-granting specifications are met.

Those who wish to seek employment in mainland China may be recommended to prospective employers for selection on merit by the university in accordance with the national policies regarding employment of college and university graduates.
