In order to serve China’s “Belt and Road” construction and support the “Belt and Road” talent training, Huaqiao University and Tanoto Foundation China jointly set up Huaqiao University Tanoto Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the “scholarship”), which is funded by Tanoto Foundation China.

Aiming at talent development, this scholarship encourages outstanding young students along the “Belt and Road” countries/regions to study in China, with a view to cultivating a large number of high-end talents for the countries and regions participating in the “Belt and Road” initiative, and actively promoting the construction of a community of political mutual trust, economic integration and cultural inclusiveness.

I. Scholarship Eligibility

1. Language Student

Indonesian students who meet the requirements of full-time undergraduate program of Huaqiao University (except the Chinese proficiency) and need to improve their Chinese proficiency.

2. Undergraduate

Students from countries/regions along the “Belt and Road” who meet the requirements of the full-time undergraduate program of Huaqiao University.

II. Scholarship Coverage

The scholarship funding amount is 30,000 yuan per person each academic year.

III. Scholarship Funding Quota and Duration

1. Language Student

Funding quota: 8 students

Scholarship duration: adopting “1+4” aid mode, that is, 1 year of Chinese language study plus 4 years of undergraduate study.

In principle, only one academic year is funded during language learning. After one academic year of language learning, students should reach the HSK level required for the undergraduate programs and pass the assessment of the college. Those who do not meet the requirements may continue language learning. Expenses during the continuation of language studies are borne by students themselves.

Students who meet the above requirements can continue to study in relevant undergraduate programs in Huaqiao University and get scholarships during the undergraduate period.

2. Undergraduate

Funding quota: 25 students (excluding 8 language students who continue to study undergraduate programs).

Scholarship duration: 4-5 years/person, the duration of the scholarship is consistent with the student’s duration of study.

IV. Scholarship Qualifications

1. Students should be from the countries and regions along the “Belt and Road”, be in good academic and behavioral standing, be in good physical and mental health, and abide by the laws and regulations of China. Applicants for language learning must be Indonesian citizens.

2. Students should be under the age of 22 and meet the undergraduate admission requirements of Huaqiao University. A senior high school diploma (must be an academic one) and excellent academic performance in middle school are needed.

3. Students should meet the Chinese proficiency for admission to relevant undergraduate programs (except language learning).

4. Freshmen who have obtained other scholarships are not eligible for this scholarship.

VII. Scholarship Application Process and Materials

Applicants should register and log on https://admissions.hqu.edu.cn/ to submit the application and upload the application documents.

Scholarship application documents include:

1.  Application Form for Huaqiao University Tanoto Scholarship (Attachment 1);

2. Passport (passport validity should be on or after December 2026) ;

3. Notarized or certified high school (or above) diploma, annual academic transcripts of high school, and high school graduation transcripts/college entrance examination transcripts. If the above documents are not in Chinese, please attach authenticated Chinese or English translations.

4. Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) transcript (HSK score must be above 180); Malaysian students of Sekolah Tinggi Persendirian Cina can provide UEC test transcripts and those who pass the Chinese test are exempted from the HSK test. HSK Certificate is no need for language students.

5. Recommendation Letter;

6. Study Plan;

7. Physical Examination Report (after February, 2025);

8. Other relevant materials.

VIII. Scholarship Evaluation

1. The scholarship evaluation shall be conducted under the principles of openness, fairness and impartiality. Recommended student list of the scholarship will be publicly displayed on the website of the relevant department of Huaqiao University and will be submitted to Huaqiao University Tanoto Scholarship Committee for approval.

2. Scholarship recipients must go through the registration procedures within the specified time, otherwise they will be treated as automatically giving up the scholarship.

IX. Grant of Scholarship

1. The scholarship is distributed on an annual basis according to the scholarship duration.

2. The scholarship is preferentially used to pay tuition, accommodation fees and activity funds. Tuition and accommodation fees are paid based on the actual fees for students’ programs and dormitories.

Huaqiao University provides a one-time subsidy of 2,000 yuan every year to cover the costs of books, insurance, physical examination and other related expenses.

3. Living allowance will be distributed to students on a monthly basis according to the actual remaining expenses of the students for the current year.

X. Scholarship Student Training and Management

1. A comprehensive assessment on the performance of scholarship recipients will be conducted by Huaqiao University each academic year. Those who pass the annual assessment will continue to enjoy the scholarship for the next academic year, while those who fail will have their scholarship funding suspended or canceled.

2. In principle, scholarship recipients are not allowed to change their majors or extend their study periods. If there are special circumstances under which students have to change their majors or extend their study periods, they should submit an application to Huaqiao University and the Foundation for approval.

3. Scholarship recipients who take a leave of absence or withdraw from Huaqiao University due to personal reasons, or who violate relevant laws, regulations or rules will automatically lose their eligibility for scholarship support.
